Final rant

Breaking Down the Wall in the Head/Ostalgie

25% of Westies willt die Mauer back up and 12% of Easties want it as well. Well, those particular westies are selfish Lümmel and those particular Easties are well… dumb, none more so than Herr Lutz. Jedermann is thinking it, I’m simply saying it.
Herr Lutz is foolish to think he was freer under the DDR. It’s just… ugh, I don’t even know where to begin. The wall protected him from Fascists? I think there must be a translation issue. It’s almost as if this article is trying to inspire contempt.  Beruhigen…. Beruhigen….
Just erinnern yourself that the grass is always greener on the other side and the cherries in the neighbor’s garden always taste a little sweeter. Why not move to the Soviet Union? Oh well, North Korea will have to do. You’ll be safe from the fascists there.

Backward Southerners, Frigid Northerners: Germany's Real Divide

I’m sure it’s already been noted the parallels between the German and American north/south divides. Someone once erzahlt mir, that es gibt some amount of truth in all stereotypes and that they must be acknowledged bevor they can be overcome. Perhaps that’s why we spend so much time exploring them.

Freistaat Sachsen: Leipzig und Dresden

Leipzig and Dresden are two cities in the free state of Saxony. I’m not sure what makes it a free state; It’s still a state of Germany. Are there any enslaved states? The most important thing realized in this article is the number of civilians killed by the allied forces in WWII, 35,000 in one state?! We are brought up believing that that our moral compass is straighter than everyone else’s, that everything we do is justified. Is the killing of civilians ever justified? Auge um Auge macht die ganze Welt blind.

Kultur 4 ihr Narren!

'Dinner for Who?': Germany's New Year 'Procedure'
Ich habe den ganz Film gesehen und ich muss sagen, dass ich es bedauere.
Honestly, this is horrible. I don’t feel (me ;) bad about saying that because it’s not German, but British comedy, which sucks in general.

Sorry, We're Closed: The Challenge of Spending Money in Germany

This doesn’t sound too different from Michigan. It’s impossible to shop many places on Sunday, though our großer stores are usually Öffnen.
“Wait,” you say. “But they have LAWS that govern the hours of stores. It’s totally overcontrolling.” True, but we also have our Michigan Blue laws.

Booze Brothers: Father's Day Debauchery in Deutschland

It pleases me that so many Germans are taking time to observe the ascension. I can’t recall ever observing this important feat myself. Leider think I that they not for religion it do. Entschuldigung. In my sleep deprived state, my newfound German word order skills tend to seep into my already poor English.
I did appreciate the description of this holiday’s evolution from the original religious observance to the drinking game. I can only imagine the GroßEltern shaking their Köpfe: „Zu meiner Zeit…“

Base Flying
Base jumping is for those who ever want to jump off the buildings of Berlin. One takes the death defying jump from 98 meters high on the roof of the Park Inn. One reaches approximate freefall velocity, roped to a special device, on the Alexander place. They who are at least 16 years old can dare the 8 second jump into the unknown.- Adrenaline rush.

The problem with this book is, we (or maybe just I) only know about half the words in any given paragraph.
But yes. It klingt wie etwas, dass groß Spaß macht. But not as geil as this:

AMD - Völlig Unoriginal but something better in the works

For this adventure with German have I Ghost seen. Jedermann hat das Filme Gesehen aber hast du ihn mit Deutscher Untertitel gesehen? Das habe ich mir gedacht!

The following is my analysis and critique of the German subtitles of a certain early scene where Patrick Swayze(Sam) and Demi Moore(Molly) argue over a chair.

Molly
Audio:         What’s this chair doing here?
Subtitle:      Was macht der Stuhl hier?
W-for-W Transliteration: What does the chair here?

Sam
Audio:         What do you mean? I love that chair.
Sub:            Das ist mein Lieblingsstuhl.
TransL:       That is my favorite-chair.

Molly
Audio:         I thought we discussed this.
Sub:            Ich dachte, wir hätten das geklärt.
TransL:       I thought, we *had* that (cleared up).

This subtitle sentence is a great one to expand on. The first clause uses regular Präteritum, aka simple past. The second clause is not only uses Plusquamperfekt, but also the Konjunctive II mood shown by “hätten” as opposed to regular Plusquamperfekt’s “hatten.” This inserts some doubt into her assumption.

The only possible fault I see here is that the second clause should begin with “dass.” I think Herr Rastalsky said this (whatever it is, subordinating conjunction?) is not necessary in English but is always required in German.

Sam:
Audio:         I’ve had it forever. When I watch TV, I sit in it.
Sub:           Ich habe ihn schon ewig. In ihm sehe ich fern.
TransL:        I have him already (eternized?). In him watch I TV.

Another suggestion: Wenn ich sehe fern, sitze ich
But don’t forget that ‘fern’ is literally ‘far’!

Molly
Audio:         This chair is ugly. And it doesn’t go with anything.
Sub:            Der Stuhl ist hässlich. Und er passt zu nichts.
TransL:        The chair is ugly.          And he fits to nothing.

Would it sound stilted to say “Dieser Stuhl…”?

Sam
Audio:         It goes with me.
Sub:            Er passt zu mir.
TransL:        He fits to me.

Molly
Audio:         You’re right. It does.
Sub:           Stimmt, das tut er.
TransL:        Correct, that does he.

It is possible the reason for omitting subtitles for audio of “What do you mean?” is that “Was meinst du?” is not something commonly said in everyday speech. Or perhaps the Subtitler just missed a phrase.

Morgen Medizinische Rant

Draftophobia: Blown Away by the Fear of Air
And

You Have What? Mysterious Illness in Germany

Intro
Normalerweise, these articles are an unfair, if Lustig, stereotype of Germans. This particular one, however, may carry more weight than usual. According to multiple firsthand accounts, the opinion that a draft will cause one to become sick seems fairly accepted and widespread in Germany. The phrase “Es Zieht” or “it draws” is commonly heard in response to an open window. Even the medical professionals reportedly back this theory.

Remember This? - Bloodletting
For over 2,000 years, bloodletting was the staple of “modern" medicine. Medical professionals were SURE that most diseases were caused by an imbalance of the vier bodily humors (blut being one of them) and that draining blood would help return the humors to balance and the patient to health.
Superstitions like these are reinforced when a person treated in this manner makes a recovery. Heute we verstehen that bloodletting has no positive effect on any disease (save perhaps slightly and temporarily lowering blood pressure) and, if anything, would weaken a person to pathogens and other diseases.

And It’s Still Happening

Similarly reinforcing, a German may come to America and experience for the first time open Fenster and draft. This German may also become sick for the first time in years at which point the superstition is reinforced.

Alternately, we fortunate, enlightened few understand that this new sickness is more likely the result of any of the hundred more realistic causes: first exposure to new allergy, contact with new pathogen strand, stress-induced compromised immune function, ect.

The subject of Draftophobia intersects with that of alternative medicine. I could wirklich schreibe ein Buch on the subject. The amount of ignorance is frustrating. My sister (a registered nurse of all people) uses a machine called Truerife, claimed to cure any disease by shaking the disease-causing pathogens apart, even conditions that aren't caused by pathogens, like arthritis.

Circulatory Collapse
The second article covers German’s circulatory collapse,” a transliteration to describe the symptoms of light headedness or weakness. In Germany though, these symptoms are defined as a disease and called Kreislaufzusammenbruch. This is not to be confused the life threatening condition, auch heißt Circulatory Collapse, which is literally a failure to move blood through the arteries or veins. Germans often miss Arbeit for their mild, common cases of Kreislaufzusammenbruch.

Modern Medicine – Some pros and cons
The modern medicine we know today doesn't always get it right. Wirklich, it is a overall blessing upon humankind and has resulted in the average increased life expectancy of the human population, perhaps to a fault. But, it is still common practice to treat many symptoms without looking for root causes. We still don’t understand the cause of many diseases and therefore classify symptoms as diseases and treat them instead.

I’ll end the rant mit was ich hoffe ist a thought provoking question: If evolutionists are correct about “survival of the fittest” driving a population to evolve, what does modern medicine mean for the fitness of the human population?

P.S.
I have to add that in Korea, most of the people I met held the belief that sleeping with a fan on in the room would result in suffocation.

The only shred of truth I could attribute to either of these theories is that if man sleeps with a fan or breeze directed over there face, it CAN cause your sinuses and the back of your throat to dry out while sleeping which will result in a sore throat upon waking.

Kung Fu Nacht

Intro:
Es tut mir leid, dass I finished “Auf der anderen Seite“ ahead of schedule. I was too impatient to wait for another AMD to come along. I can’t stand starting things and not finishing them.

What:
Ich habe für diesem AMD ein anderer Film gesehen. Es Heißt “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.” I was having drängen(urge) for some kung Fu. The 1993 film stars Jason Scott Lee as Bruce Lee. His wife is played by a very pretty but not widely known actress, Lauren Holly.
How:

I couldn’t find German audio so I used German subtitles. I had them programmed in VLC to appear just a moment early so I could pause and try to take an educated guess at the translation before I heard the audio in English. Much of it was easy to understand. As always, I was amused by the differences in the way things are said between the two languages.
Review:

The acting isn’t very good but the movie is nonetheless entertaining. It is based on Bruce Lee’s childhood but mostly his time after returning to California. Much of the film might seem dramatized, like Bruce being tormented by a Demon Samurai. But After a little research, I learned that his parents really did at first give him a girl name, Sai-Fon or “Little Phoenix”,to fool the demon they believed killed their first son before Bruce.

Here are some examples of what was easily understood:

Und er wird dich suchen. Du musst gehen, heute Nacht.
Wohin, Papa? Wohin kann ich gehen?
Du magst amerikanische Filme. Du magst amerikanische Autos. Du gehst nach Amerika!
And he will you seek(the demon). You must go, today night.
Where to, Papa? Where to can I go?
You like American Films. You like American cars. You go to America!

Du seihst toll aus.
Danke.
Blau steht dir gut.
Ich bin froh, es gefällt dir. Du siehst auch toll aus. Ich sah dich noch nie mit so vielen Kleidern.
Nehmen wir einen Tische?

You look great. (not sure what “aus“ adds to this sentence)
Thanks.
Blue stands for you good. (this must be some sort of expression) He says “Blue looks good on you”
I am happy, it pleases you. (I’ve never seen you with so many clothes)
Take we a table. (Shall we get a table?)

Some of my favorites that I learned:

Er soll es beweisen!
He should it prove! (He should prove it!)

“Entshuldigung” can apparently be used as a verb for “excuse me”
Examples:

Entshuldigung mich. Entshuldigung Sie…ect.

---------------------------------------------------------
1 hour doing
25 minutes writing

I'd like to finish the movie in one more AMD mostly covering the plot and other German phrases I've learned.
