Atemlos Durch Die Nacht - Helene Fischer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b918LoqWNPI

Halten einfach fest was uns zusammen hält, oho, oho
Bist du richtig süchtig, Haut an Haut ganz berauscht,
Alles was ich will, ist da, große Freiheit pur, ganz nah,

Auf Englisch: (my best guess)

Come, we climb to the highest roof in the world.Hold what keeps us together, oho, ohoAre you addicted, skin on skin intoxicatedIn my arms the parachute opens (???) oho, ohoAll I want is there, pure great freedom, so closeNo we do not want to leave here, everything is perfect.

Die Amerikanische Bands sind The Rollling Stones, The Fortunes, The Carpentars, Chicago, usw.

For this AMD i watched Giorgio Moroder's version of the movie Metropolis. I watched the original awhile back, which is the highest rated movie made in Germany, and i really liked it. Metropolis is the story of a dystopian future, where an elite few rule over an entire working class and leave them to toil away in their labors while they reap the benefits. The son of the Master of Metropolis then eyes a beautiful working girl and descends into the depths of the city in search of her, where he sees how the other people of Metropolis live, i.e. in constant drudgery. He then sets out on a journey to both find this girl and fix the city, a goal that puts him at odds with his father. The movie, made in the late 20's, is an interesting commentary and the current Weimar Republic, which at this point, was not handling the economy very well, and because of partisan politics, did not do very well with helping the working class. This move fostered a strong communist party in Germany that was beat out of the government, and then subsiquently killed by Hitler's National Socialist party. This updated version of Metropolis though, has new lighting and an 80's soundtrack written by Giorgio Moroder featuring artists such as Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Jon Anderson, Adam Ant, Cycle V, Loverboy, Billy Squier, and the unmistakable Freddie Mercury. This puts the movie into the perspective of the 80's, and lends a neat comparison to the overcompensated Capitalist policies of the BRD and other Western Countries.

Hi, for my AMD I decided to go on youtube and search for german youtube channels. I happened to come across a youtube channel called Germany vs USA, and it seems like a great channel that posts a lot of videos about the differences between Germany and the USA. I decided to watch their most recent video about Superheros between Germany and USA. Superman comics started in the 1930s during the great depression as a form of escapism, and as time got closer to the events of world war two we begin to see some propaganda in comics. Germans and the Japanese were portrayed as the bad guys in many of the comics during this time. (captain america, x men) Captain America was a comic that had great impressions on this time. The comic in a way portrayed to kids what war was like and how serious it was. The character Captain america was seen as the ideal patriotic soldier who would do whatever he could to protect his country.

For my AMD, ich decided to listen to Disney songs in Deutsch. Natürlich ich started mit "I'll make a man out of you.
This version was sehr gut, weil the uploader added Deutsch und English subtitles to the video.  It was interesting how the Deutsch version lyrics were different than the English lyrics. The lyrics were still similar, aber there were subtle changes. There were viele familiar Worte in the song.

Ich then decided to listen to "I won't say I'm in Love,' hoping it would be easier to follow. Es war. Ich liked the line "Das ist doch der Hammer," which seems to translate roughly to "that is crazy." Deutsch idioms are just as funny as English ones. This was much easier to follow along, as ich knew viele Worte in the song.

Hello! For my AMD Ich habe gelesen about the German Film Awards (Deutsche Filmpreis). Deutschland mag these awards because they promote the film industry im Land. The ceremony wird normalerweise in Berlin.

Es gibt einundzwanzig awards for the show. Im Jahr 2013, there were many interessant films. Ich habe the trailers of some of the films gesehen.

"Oh Boy"

Dieser Film seems schrulligen (quirky) und lustig. I mochte to watch more of this movie next Wochenende. Tom Schilling is in it too, which is schön.

"Schlussmacher"

Dieser Film seems sehr interessant, aber ungerade. Die Akteure sind sehr lustig!

"Lore"

This film seems intense and a bit sad. I think this film was definitely one of the better ones during the 2013 awards.

After researching the German Film Awards, I am definitely inspired to watch more German films. Ich dense its cool how each country goes about producing movies in different types of ways.

Auf Wiedersehen!

For this first blog, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I found a short movie on YouTube called "Schwarzfahrer," which means "Black Rider." It's a movie that takes a look at racism that is found in Germany. I don't know anything about the history of race in Germany, but the video did remind me of racist things I've heard older people say back home. Most of the video takes place in a train where a black young man sits next to an old white woman. The entire time the old man says a bunch of very offensive things not only against blacks, but against Turkish and Polish people as well. While she is saying these things everyone looks on and doesn't say a word. One old man acknowledged the woman and agreed with her, but other than that the people just tried to ignore her. The ending was very satisfying because everyone had to take out their tickets to show to the train guy (I'm not sure what they're called) and the young man snatches the woman's ticket and eats it. This makes the woman look crazy to the train guy as she blabbers on about how the young man ate her ticket. He doesn't believe her of course and kicks her out for fare-dodging. I found this interesting because we learned about fare-dodging back in German 101.

Fur meine ersten AMD activity of German 101, I decided to look at some songs of the seemingly popular German metal band "Rammstein." I cannot say that I am a fan of this type of music (I don't like metal that much), but I can actually understand some of the German lyrics. The most distinct song for me was their song "Ich will." I thought this song simply meant something like "I will" when I first listened to this song before I took German, but it feels odd knowing that the singer is repeatedly shouting out "I want"in his terrifying, deep German voice.

Other words that stuck out are mostly the pronouns: mir and mich. I also heard the word verstehe, so I'm guessing the song is about how the singer willt people to understand him better.

I also listened to their song "Amerika" where the opening lyrics are "We're all living in Amerika, Amerika, its wunderbar" but the music video and some following lyrics show that this saying is probably sarcastic or ironic. I'm actually not sure if they are trying spoof nationalism with words like "kontrollen" "weiBen Haus" and "Mickey Maus" or they are trying to appeal to escapism that we're not living in high-income places like America because the music video depicts seemingly poor or tribal people in Africa or Asia

For the most part, I didn't really understand the songs messages, but the titles of the Rammstein songs are pretty simple. Keine Lust: No Lust, Mein Land: My Land, Engel: Angel, Mein Teil: My Tale. When listening to these songs, I really only picked up some words in the chorus. The music videos seem to be taking a common theme though: spoofing the life of greed/control/oppression in the current society through caricatures or extremities. (Ex: No Lust shows a bunch of greedy, fat people singing about how they have no desires)

For my AMD 1, I read and followed Bastian Schweinsteiger and Bayer Munich on Twitter. I really enjoyed reading their posts because for the most part they were easy to read, they were short and direct. But I also liked reading them because it was interesting to see what Bastian does on a day to day bases and to see Germany through Twitter. I also liked following Bayer Munich's account because it is fascinating to see what the team is up to, also from Bayer Munich's account I found myself going from one german player's account to another. I ended up spending a lot of time on twitter and reading a lot of tweets in german.

For my first AMD, I watched the rest of the film "Mostly Martha". I really liked all the characters in the movie. Martha's character development was interesting throughout the film. I also think that Martha is a living rebuttal to the stereotype of Germans being "emotionless" or "expressionless". At first, you see her as this rigid, disciplined woman. But then when things begin to change now with Lina in her life, it shows that every human being has feelings and in life, there are times when you just can't help but let them go and that is okay. Die Familie appears to be an important theme. And I just couldn't get enough of the food, especially when the camera had close-ups of some dishes. This film ended with a nice and warm feeling. I'm glad for what happened in the end.
